Meeting with Snoo

We are lucky enough to have Snoo Wilson on board. I had dinner with him last night; we split a bottle of wine and talked all things theatrical. He also offered to help out in any way possible, which is both exciting and daunting! He gave me some very good insights that will without a doubt only service the production for the better.

Snoo's a prolific writer, and his work has been staged at the Arcola, the Royal Court, the Bush Theatre, the Young Vic and by the RSC.

Next production decided: Snoo Wilson's FLAMING BODIES

Hi there,

we at Roar have just decided on our next production: Snoo Wilson's Flaming Bodies. It's a great and completely bizarre play. It's certainly going to be a challenge, both for us and our audience. More to be revealed later...

After Liverpool

James Saunders writes of the play: 'After Liverpool is not a play but a suite of pieces, to be performed by one or more actors and one or more actresses. The order in which the pieces are played is not specified. Using a musical analogy, the script gives some themes, within and between which any number of variations are possible.'

Or to put it simply, the play-script consists of lots of little chunks of dialogue simply shared between M and W (man and woman). With six actors, the first thing to do was to establish three couples, which we did through improvisation. After the couples were established, we set about organising the chunks of dialogue into three distinct narratives, with some overlaps.

We established three locations, and ended up with a couple who spent most of their time in bed, with a dysfunctional, primarily sexual, relationship, a couple who spent their time arguing in their living room, and finally a couple who kept on meeting in a bar but never quite made it happen. Oh and the girl from the bed ends up going to the bar and taking bar-man back to her bedroom, so there was a crossover and a bit of infidelity thrown in for good measure. And all of it was put together and rehearsed in two weeks!

We did two performances to packed houses on both nights, and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy it, to the extent that they weren't distracted by the noise from the footie downstairs in the pub. Or at least that's what they told us.

Roar Theatre

Roar Theatre was established in 2010 by Bryony Hope and Eleanor Wyld, after a vague promise to work together post-university, and a much-less-vague-promise once they had both graduated.

Roar was set up to provide a platform for emerging theatrical talent in London, especially for those attempting to establish a career in theatre. It gives young practitioners a forum in which to work with others in a similar position to themselves. The aim is to produce good, thought provoking work, with no gimmicks involved. Just thoroughly enjoyable theatre.

Roar are lucky enough to to have a free space above The Lion pub on Stoke Newington Church Street, a godsend in a city as bloody expensive as London.
